Loss of Sense Enchances Other Senses?

The title is pretty much self-explantory. This video is about the interesting observation brought up by my hearing neighbor. She wondered if since I am deaf, my other senses (vision, smell, touch, and taste) are much stronger and keener? I would say probably so!

Educating New Parents of Deaf Baby

Suggestions and ideas desired on how to approach new parents of deaf baby from the neutral standpoint with the goal of educating them to all the options available. Cochlear implantation is not the only answer and it may not work for every one. Signing Kids of Northwest Indiana are currently working with the local hospitals on a project where the hospitals will contact us to meet with new parents of deaf baby (once they discover the baby is deaf through newborn hearing exam as mandated by Indiana...as I am sure nationwide) and provide support system. We will provide the binders with brochure, resources, facts about ASL and its importance during the children's crucial years in language development, and basic information. If there are resources you think we should use in the binder, please do share! We will love to see this project succeed so the awareness of deafness can be spread among new parents. To reassure them that deafness is not a bad thing and cochlear implantation is not the only option available as the medical community led the parents to believe.

Thank you very much!

A hearing woman who thought she knew sign language.

Did any of you had an experience when a hearing person attempted to carry a converstation with you as if he or she was fluent in ASL? I have, this funny incident happened to me yesterday when I went to the local food mart to grab a loaf of bread. This odd but sweet lady came up and conversed with me in her "la-la' sign language. Watch the video for the story.

Please share yours if it has happened to you too! :)

Interpreter Woes: Refusal due to religion beliefs.

This vlog is in regards to one of my interpreter woes. This interpreter stopped signing all of sudden due to the lecture clashing with her religion beliefs. If you were in my shoes, how would you handle it?

*I apologize in advance for the nature of my vlog. It was rushed and may came across as incoherent because I wanted to get it posted before the kids get out of school. Or else I'd forget due to the distractions! :) *

In Loving Memory of.....

Tamara Lynn Moote

Tammy's life was taken away from her suddenly on August 10th in a single car accident. The accident occurred while she was visiting her parents in Canada. She was 35 years old. She was a dear friend to me and the deaf community. She was a beautiful deaf woman with a smile that was contagious and loving fun spirit. We will miss her greatly. For those of you who knew Tammy, there will be a memorial service next Friday August 24th. Please see the information below. (copied and pasted)

On Friday, Augsut 24, 2007, we will have a memorial Service for TAMARA at St. Francis Borgia Deaf Center, 8025 W. Addison, Chicago, IL 60634.There will be a prayer service at 7pm. People will have the opportunityto share memories of TAMARA and pray for her and her family. After the service, we will have refreshments for everyone. This will bea time to tell stories and share our friendship. Everyone is welcome toattend, and we encourage you to bring snacks and/or desserts to shareafter the service.

I dug up an old picture of Tammy and our friends. Tammy was on the far right in the picture. I was at the top second left (dark hair with goofy grin). We lost in touch before I became pregnant and her contact info was lost in the move. I regret not getting back in touch with her...our lives got busy all of sudden. There is a valuable lesson from Tammy's death....friends are cherished in our lives and always try to keep in touch with our friends. For we will never know when or suddenly she or he will be gone forever. Fly free, Mooser.....I will always remember you in my heart.

A Peek into My Childhood: "Portable Radio"

This was a funny experience I had when I was a mainstreamed student in elementary school. For the speech therapy, I was forced to wear bulky box hearing aids. I decided to turn it into something it was not. Just watch. ;)
